EU NON-DISCRIMINATION PROMOTION WITHIN AND BEYOND THE EU

Jean Monnet Module (2019-2022)

EUNONDI - EU Non-discrimination Promotion within and beyond the EU is a Jean Monnet Module, co-funded by Erasmus + Program – Jean Monnet Action of the European Commission between 2019 and 2022 in Atılım University. The Module aims to expand the knowledge on concepts, theories and cases regarding EU’s non-discrimination policy within and beyond its borders.

In the Classroom

COURSES

EUNONDI offers two in-depth undergraduate courses.

  • EU Non-Discrimination Promotion within and beyond the EU providing knowledge on EU’s non-discrimination regime and the role of the EU in promoting it in EU member states, EU candidate states and EU neighbours;

  • EU Non-Discrimination Promotion in Turkey unpacking EU’s transformative power and Turkey, EU’s non-discrimination regime and the role of the EU in promoting it in Turkey, Turkish current state in non-discrimination, different issue areas within the principle of non-discrimination in Turkey.

ACTIVITIES

EUNONDI organizes various events including workshop and roundtable series.


The annual workshop series bring researchers and graduate students together for discussion and, therefore, promote interaction and collaboration between them on EU’ norm diffusion and the principle of non-discrimination;

The annual roundtable series bring academic scholars, policy makers, public officials and civil society together to discuss EU non-discrimination promotion within and beyond the EU. It aims to bring theoretical perspectives with practical ones and exchange ideas from different perspectives

Get to Know Us

GÖZDE YILMAZ

Module Leader

Gözde Yılmaz is an associate professor in Atılım University, Turkey. She completed her Ph.D. in Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies (BTS), Free University Berlin. She has a BA on International Relations from Hacettepe University and MA on International Studies (European Integration) from University of Birmingham.  In her Ph.D. project, she studied external Europeanization theories and Turkey’s minority rights policy and put forward an interactive theoretical framework for external Europeanization. Her further research interests are norm diffusion, European integration, external Europeanization, EU-Turkey Relations, minority rights and non-discrimination in the EU and Turkey.

TUĞBA GÜRÇEL AKDEMIR

Academic Coordinator

Tuğba Gürçel Akdemir is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Atılım University. Dr. Gürçel Akdemir has received her PhD from the Department of Political Science at Bilkent University. In her PhD thesis, she comparatively studied the cases of Turkey and Poland on how Europeanization affected the state-religion relations in the specific field of religious education in both countries according to the Europeanization theories. She holds a M.A. in Global Political Economy and the European Union from the same university. She studied International Relations for her bachelor’s degree. During her PhD, she worked as a research assistant at Middle East Technical University responsible of support and supervision for the national and international research projects. Her research interests are Europeanization theories, impact of Europeanization on domestic policies, state-religion relations, comparative politics and Turkish politics.

BURCU ÖZDEMIR SARIGIL

Academic Project Assistant

Burcu Özdemir Sarıgil is currently working as part time lecturer at Bilkent University and Atılım University, Ankara, Turkey. She received her PhD degree from the Department of International Relations, Middle East Technical University (METU), Turkey. She also studied at University of Cologne and European University Institute as visiting PhD student. She had a Master’s degree in European Studies from METU. Between 2004 and 2014, she worked as research and project assistant at the Center for European Studies, METU. The main research interest areas of Burcu Özdemir Sarıgil are the EU-Turkey relations, international organizations, diffusion of international norms, women’s human rights, gender, gender in foreign policy, violence against women and the new social movements.

ZEYNEP ELIF KOÇ

Administrative Project Assistant

Zeynep Elif Koç is a research assistant in Atılım University. She has completed her bachelor's and master's degree from Hacettepe University, Department of International Relations. Currently, she is doing her doctorate in Middle East Technical University, Department of International Relations. Her main research interests are post-structuralist studies in IR, legitimization practices and Balkan politics. She has a research article published in April 2018 along with several research articles in progress.

DIĞDEM SOYALTIN COLELLA

External Assessor

Diğdem Soyaltın Colella is an Assistant Professor at Department of Political Science and Manager of Energy and Environment Research Centre at Altınbaş University. She is also a board member at Transparency International Turkey and the managing editor of Research Turkey-a London based research center. Previously she has worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Stockholm University Institute of Turkish Studies (SUITS) and a consultant in projects conducted by Council of Europe and European Union on anti-corruption policies and judicial sector reforms in Turkey. She has received her Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science at Freie Universität Berlin and worked as a research fellow at the Research College on Transformative Power of Europe (KFG) during her Ph.D. studies. Her main research interests are Europeanization and domestic change, public policy and governance, Turkish politics and more specific policies of the fight against corruption.
